Deterrents only suppress the drive while you are in the room. They never give it a destination, so the moment you leave, the couch arm is still the only target available.
The clippers and the towel
My first attempts following advice on the internet were very stressful, almost gave up.
Clipping requires her cooperation with you. That was always the flaw in the method, not a flaw in you. Two nails in, she thrashes, and you both lose.

I put treats in the box. The cats reach in and get them and their claws get groomed.

She is a huge cat and the openings are wide enough for her whole paw, which I was worried about. She has been pawing the balls through the openings for over a week and the tips are noticeably blunter. My forearms are the proof.
